'City's players won fair & square' | Cunningham regrets Gerrard's 'interest' in UEFA ruling

In light of UEFA's decision to punish Manchester City with a two-year ban from European competition, Kenny Cunningham is disappointed to hear the former Liverpool captain share his thoughts on the matter of City's 2013/14 Premier League success.

After his Rangers side had beaten Livingston on Sunday afternoon, Steven Gerrard admitted that he had been paying close attention to the situation surrounding UEFA's judgement on Manchester City's behaviour.

"We will see whether the Premier League act from there," remarked the former Liverpool captain. "I'm really interested to see the outcome of that.

"Until I get the punishment from the Premier League, I won't comment further. But I'm really, really interested in it...for obvious reasons."

Speaking on Monday's OTB AM, Kenny Cunningham believes he has already said too much, however.

"For me, I don't think in terms of looking back like that retrospectively," commented the former Republic of Ireland captain. "Liverpool players had their opportunity over the course of a season to come out on top of Manchester City and they didn't."

Steven Gerrard

It is little over a decade since Manchester City were taken over by the Emirati royal, Sheikh Mansour. In that time, the club has won, among many cups, four Premier League titles.

Although there is as yet no indication that the Premier League will look to follow UEFA's investigation into City's financial dealings across that period, for the likes of Steven Gerrard it appears that Liverpool's falling short of the Manchester club in 2013/14 still resonates.

"It's easy for me to say, obviously, because I'm not connected, but it isn't the way I'd want to win a league," noted Cunningham of the hypothetical scenario whereby Liverpool and Gerrard are retrospectively awarded a Premier League title.

"I understand the argument that says, 'Well, City shouldn't have had these players and blah, blah, blah.' I understand that argument but ultimately, from a sporting spectacle, they went up against Manchester City and came out second-best.

"For me, that shouldn't change regardless of the outcome of any investigation. There shouldn't be retrospective justice dealt to Manchester City.

"They won the league fairly and squarely on the football pitch on a man-to-man basis over a season, and in a sporting context they earned those trophies and that should remain intact."
