Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny has hit out at Cork City counterpart John Caulfield as their war of words continues unabated.
It originated when Kenny had made a point of highlighting the fact that current SSE Airtricity League leaders Cork City had had 13 penalties awarded to them in comparison to Dundalk who had not been awarded a penalty over the previous year.
While Kenny had described that "thirteen penalties is outrageous", he had also said that "in terms of the manufacturing of penalties the referees have to see through that".
That lead to a forceful response from Caulfield who described Kenny's remarks as an "astonishing attack on referees and assistant referees".
However, Kenny has now hit back at Caulfield in comments to DundalkSport.ie after his team beat UCD in the EA Sports Cup on Monday.
"I think his personal attack on me is quite low. As a fellow manager you should never launch personal attacks like that and that’s disappointing," said Kenny.
The Dundalk boss went on to say: "I didn’t criticise the officials. I referenced the fact that players are manufacturing penalties and that referees need to be more vigilant to it. That was the main point of it."
Cork City currently lead reigning champions Dundalk by nine points at the top of the SSE Airtricity League.
