Southampton move to the top of the Premier League with win over Newcastle

Southmapton Ralph Hasenhuttl says it's a "little bit scary" but "not surprising" that his team are at the top of the Premier League table.

They're at the summit for the first time since 1988 after goals from Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong have them a 2-0 win against Newcastle at St Mary's on Friday night.

“It’s amazing what my team does at the moment," the Saints boss told Sky Sports. "We can maybe score a little bit more but the rest was nearly perfect. Good game management. We only gave away one header. Everybody was on the highest level.

“It’s a little bit scary what we’re doing at the moment to be honest but not so surprising because, when I see them working and taking everything we try to work on, then it must come the moment where you can see it in a Premier League game.

“I just told the guys that we invested so much in this time together, we made so many big steps forward and we are now a strong side. This is not a coincidence because we developed every part of our game.”

Southampton forward Theo Walcott says they're determined to continue their strong start to the campaign.

“It’s an absolutely fantastic achievement. First time in the club’s history I believe, where it all started for me, it’s an absolute honour. Sadly there’s no fans but we work hard for each other and the work is showing.

“It’s always a worry at 1-0 when we dominated the game so much but it just shows the character we’ve got and Stuart getting the goal at the end was much deserved.”
