"Solskjaer was making it up as he went along" - John Giles on MUFC penalty farrago

John Giles believes that the Manchester United penalty farrago is down to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not taking responsibility for designating a spot-kick specialist.

John was speaking to Off The Ball on his Thursday night slot, and thinks that the situation displayed on Monday night could have further consequences for United.

"The manager is responsible for this," said John, speaking about Solskjaer's comments post-match that the players should have decided the taker pre-match.

"These are off-the-field issues that you have to sort out quickly and simply. If it is Pogba or Rashford as penalty-taker, then they are the penalty-taker. You don't have two penalty-takers."

John believes that the dual-taker role could potentially lead to problems further down the line.

"Let's say we have two penalty takers - say neither of them are keen to take a penalty. What do you do?

"The other night it looked like two wanted to take it, and Rashford said 'OK, you take it.'

"It should have been sorted out the week that Solskjaer took over the job as manager. It shouldn't be decided by the players before they go out.

"The manager is blaming the two players here and it is absolute rubbish."

John believes that Solskjaer's post-match explanation rang of a man scrabbling for answers to an unexpected problem.

"Solskjaer was making it up as he went along after the match, and then he was blaming the players for not sorting it out between them before they go out on the pitch.

"I don't believe that Rashford was too pleased. He behaved himself well, but he had the ball in his hands first to take the penalty.

"I heard that they decided that last week because it was Rashford that was fouled, he should take the penalty and then this week it was Pogba that was fouled, so he took the penalty.

"This just gets worse as it goes along. The penalty-taker takes the penalties, end of story."
