Shelbourne sign versatile Football League veteran Mark Byrne

Shelbourne have completed the signing of Mark Byrne.

Having started his senior career at Nottingham Forest, the 31- year old has just finished a 13-year spell bouncing around the football league.

Byrne's most recent port of call was Gillingham, for whom he made 157 appearances. He was named the club's player of the year for the 2017-18 season.

The Kilnamanagh native can play in midfield or a right-back, and has impressed Shels boss Ian Morris after a spell training with the Tolka Park side.

His signing has come in time for their SSE Airtricity Premier Division trip to Dublin rivals Shamrock Rovers.

"I am absolutely delighted to have a player of Marks quality and experience with us," Morris told Shels' website.

"Mark is a versatile player who can play in midfield, full back or out wide. He will go straight into the match day squad for tonight (against Shamrock Rovers).

"Mark has played over 400 games in England. That is a testament to the attitude and quality Mark possesses,” he added."

Shels travel to Tallaght off the back of earning their first home point since the restart with a 1-1 draw with Derry City.

Rovers haven't won a game against Dublin opposition since their 1-0 victory over Bohemians on the opening night of the season.

Stephen Bradley's side dropped points for the first time last week as they were held to a scoreless draw by St. Patrick's Athletic.
