Seamus Coleman out for "several weeks" as World Cup qualifiers look doubtful

Seamus Coleman's season gets off to the worst possible start as Everton confirm he will be out for several weeks with an ankle injury.

Ireland's right-back arrived at Goodison Park in a protective boot and Martin O'Neill will now have to sweat over a man who showed just how important he can be to Ireland when he was named as the captain of the side that beat Italy 1-0 in order to help them qualify for the last 16 of Euro 2016.

Ronald Koeman was also forced to improvise with Mason Holgate getting the nod for his debut in place of Coleman. The 19-year-old has never played for Everton since joining from Barnsley last season.

Ireland play Oman in a friendly at the end of August and play Serbia in their first World Cup qualifier on September 5th.
