An "embarrassed" Seamus Coleman spoke in the aftermath of Ireland's shock defeat against Luxembourg in Dublin on Saturday night.
After Ireland's World Cup hopes went up in smoke against Luxembourg on Saturday night, captain Seamus Coleman spoke to the media in the immediate aftermath of a shock defeat.
"It is a shocking result," he told RTÉ, "an embarrassing result."
Ireland's second defeat from two games in the new World Cup qualifying campaign, Coleman did not hold back in condemning tonight's result.
"Let's not hide behind anyone for that one, it is on us as players," he stated. "Yeah, we should be embarrassed.
"As players we need to have a good hard look at ourselves, you need people demanding the ball out there and I don't think we did that enough. Listen, I've got to come out here and do an interview but, there's no words for that there - it is embarrassing.
"On behalf of everyone at home watching, as players we take this on the chin but it is nowhere near what we wanted."
Seamus Coleman subsequently attempted to capture the mood within the Republic of Ireland dressing room after the defeat.
"Yeah, listen, there's anger, embarrassment, a bit of everything," he explained. "You know, it is not good enough and there's no words I can say to you to make people at home feel any better.
"I think as players we should be disappointed to have Gavin [Bazunu's] debut tainted with that - we should be taking that on a chin for younger lads."
