Sam Allardyce refuses to confirm if Wayne Rooney will remain as England captain

Sam Allardyce, the new England manager has refused to confirm if Wayne Rooney will remain as England's captain.

Allardyce spoke in public for the first time on Monday morning as England's new manager at their base in St. George's Park. When asked about Rooney's position as England's captain, the former Sunderland manager would not commit to the Manchester United striker keeping the job."

"It's far too early to make predictions in that area. I'm going to leave that until we meet all the players and get all the coaching staff together behind the scenes and plan for the internationals in September".

Rooney is England's leading goalscorer and is only ten appearances behind Peter Shilton in the all-time list for English internationals. His 115 caps puts him in second place, along with David Beckham.

The 30-year-old made his England debut in 2003 and became captain on a full-time basis after Steven Gerrard retired following the 2014 World Cup.

England travel to Slovakia to open their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign in Trnava.
