Sam Allardyce officially appointed as the new England manager

Sam Allardyce has been officially announced as the new manager of England.

The former Bolton and West Ham manager will leave his position with Sunderland to take up the job at the helm of English football after Roy Hodgson resigned in the aftermath of their defeat to Iceland at Euro 2016.

Allardyce started his management career with Limerick FC nearly 25 years ago, guiding them to the First Division title during his time in charge there.

Speaking to the BBC, Father Joe Young, who was Chairman of the club at the time, stated that "it's a great moment in my priesthood," as it looked like the news was on the way to being confirmed earlier this week.

In an official statement, the FA said that "following a comprehensive and structured process," they were "delighted" to announce that Allardyce would be taking over as the new manager. The 61-year-old has signed an initial two-year contract, and will take up the position with immediate effect.

Allardyce's first match in charge of his new side is not too far away either, as England have a friendly game lined up for September 1st. Three days later, he will have his first competitive fixture, as England look to being their campaign to make it to the World Cup in Russia in 2018 with a win against Slovakia at Wembley Stadium.
