Sam Allardyce is "the obvious choice" to become England's manager

The momentum is building behind Sam Allardyce to become the next manager of England.

Allardyce is currently the bookmaker's favourite to replace Roy Hodgson after England's elimination from the Second Round at Euro 2016. The current Sunderland manager has been given a vote of confidence by former Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson to take the job.

Ferguson was speaking on Tuesday night at a charity event when he was asked about a job he was twice previously offered in 1999 and 2001.

"There's only three English managers in the Premier Division. Alan Pardew, the boy (Eddie) Howe and Big Sam (Allardyce)". Ferguson said at the event.

"With Sam’s experience, he is the obvious choice. But they have to search wider to make sure they get the right one. If it’s Sam, fine. But they have to make sure they try and have someone who has the capabilities, the tactical awareness and the also the feel about an English national team."

The FA has stated a foreign manager is something they are willing to consider, but if they choose a manager closer to home, Ferguson feels only one man should get it. "Sam is the best English candidate because he's in the Premier Division."

England's next game is a 2018 World Cup qualifier, away to Slovakia in September.
