Russian Olympic medalists will each be given a free BMW by the state

Despite the pre-Olympics scandal surrounding Russian athletes. they still managed to win 56 medals at Rio 2016.

Russia finished in fourth place in the overall medal table, despite having blanket bans from the athletics and weightlifting. 

The team won four gold medals in each of the wrestling and fencing competitions, winning a combined 16 medals in those two sports. Gold medals were also won in rhythmic gymnastics, judo, synchronised swimming, gymnastics, boxing, handball, tennis and modern pentathlon.

Such has been the success of the team, the Russian state news agency TASS has announced that every medal winner will receive a complementary BMW from the Russian government.

The medalists meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday, where the keys will be handed over to the athletes. Gold medalists will be given a X6, while silver and bronze winners will be given a X5 and X3 respectively.

Russia had six multiple Olympic medalists in Rio including Aliya Mustafina. The artistic gymnast won a gold, silver and bronze medal. It's not yet known if she will be handed all three cars as a gift from the state.
