Roy Keane calls James Ward-Prowse a cheat after Iceland penalty incident

Republic of Ireland legend Roy Keane has said that Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse is "a cheat" after the midfielder was seen scuffing the penalty spot before Iceland took their penalty kick in the recent Nations League match.

With England leading 1-0 against Iceland in the final moments, the hosts were given a golden chance to equalise when Liverpool's Joe Gomez was penalised for grappling with Holmbert Fridjonsson.

Before the penalty was taken, James Ward-Prowse was pictured scuffing up the penalty spot.

Three minutes before that incident, England took the lead with a penalty of their own after Sverrir Ingason handled Raheem Sterling's shot. The Manchester City attacker subsequently slotted it home.

Speaking on ITV, Keane was not impressed with the actions of the Southampton midfielder, or the opinion of his ITV colleague Ian Wright, who felt that Ward-Prowse's actions were OK.

The former Arsenal and England striker said: "I don't mind that from an England player, I like that devilment about him. If that happens in a major competition and England get something from it, I'm not going to complain."

Keane replied: "It's cheating, I don't like to see that."

Later in the conversation, Keane said that he didn't fancy Bjarnason to score the penalty because of his laidback demeanour before the match.

After footage emerged of Bjarnason's behaviour in the tunnel before the game, Keane said: "I never fancied him with the penalty. I understand players being relaxed sometimes, but he’s almost too relaxed… he looks like he’s just waiting to go to the toilet or for a taxi!”

England will play Denmark next in the Nations League, while Iceland travel to Belgium.
