Manchester United are using Roy Keane to help the next generation

As Manchester United attempt to move forward under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, journalist Andy Mitten explained how stars from the past like Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs have been drafted in to deliver some important lessons to emerging players.

More often than not seen in his role as a pundit nowadays, Roy Keane has been back at Manchester United in a different capacity recently.

"Roy has been in," football journalist and United We Stand editor Andy Mitten explained on Thursday's OTB AM, "to speak with the kids, not the first-team players.

"Ryan Giggs has been in as well and I think that's a good thing because you've got these former world class players who live very nearby.

"Roy and Nicky Butt (Head of First Team Development) are good mates so for Nicky to get Roy to come in and speak to youngsters... I don't think any of the players walk out of that meeting with Roy or Ryan and think that was a waste of time."

The former Manchester United captain spent 12 and a half seasons at the club and still lives around the Manchester area.

"I hear lots of good stuff about Roy around south Manchester which doesn't get reported," explained Mitten. "You know, he gets invited to a local charity or one of them before was Altrincham Football Club when they needed money.

"He turns up, didn't ask for any money and he just stayed as long as he was wanted."

In 2016, Altrincham Today reported that the Cork native was set to appear at a fundraiser with the club and according to Grahame Rowley, "told us he would stay as long as we want."

"I find him forever a fascinating figure," admitted Mitten, "and if he can help Manchester United, and I know he's good mates with Ole Gunnar as well and he's added Darren Fletcher into it now as well... I'm optimistic."
