Ronaldo breaks more records as he leads Portugal to European Championships final

There's no doubting that since he first graced the Euros in a Portuguese jersey, Cristiano Ronaldo has been a vital part of his country's ability to punch above their weight on the international stage.

With a goal and an assist last night (not that he really meant the latter), the Real Madrid superstar helped Portugal through to another final, more than a decade since the 2004 final where they lost out to a resolute Greece side.

As he heads to the final once again, there are some remarkable numbers that tell the story of his international appearances with Portugal.

After the game against Wales, Ronaldo has become the first player to appear in three semi-finals at the European Championships.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has also become the joint highest scorer in the competition's history, with nine goals, pulling him level with Michel Platini. However, it has taken the Portuguese 20 games (another record, giving him the most appearances of any player at the Euros) to reach that figure, while the former UEFA president scored his haul in the space of just one tournament.

Ronaldo has also become the only player to score in four Euros tournaments (2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016) and is the first player to score three or more goals at two different Euros.

As if that wasn't enough, he has also become the highest scorer at the Euros in the history of the Portuguese national side, overtaking Nuno Gomes thanks to his goals so far this tournament.

Speaking after the match as he fought back the tears, Ronaldo said that he has achieved everything in his career through hard work, and has been "13 years at the highest level. The numbers don't lie. With a lot of hard work, with a lot of humility, and the spirit of sacrifice that has been there throughout my career, that's what makes these things happen."
