There's 'a little bit of Mourinho' in Monaco's manager

Last time, we focused on Monaco on Off The Ball, things were not looking that rosy as the club looked to cut costs by offloading main stars Falcao and James Rodriguez.

Leading into the game, they had been in good form, with their defence especially formidable.

But no one could have expected what they did to Arsenal last night as they beat the Gunners 3-1 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 first leg tie.

We've got the deservedly harsh word on Arsenal already from Kenny Cunningham, but tonight French football writer Xavier Rivoire gave us the perspective from the Monaco side.

"The fact that those two superstars (Falcao and Rodriguez) left, made the team play more as a unit. They also brought up some young players. And they found in Jardim a great coach," said Rivoire.

"Remember he's the coach who said that they knew the Arsenal game inside-out. They knew they had to stay steady first half and had to be defensively perfect. They also knew that in the second half, they would have chances. That's exactly what happened. But I have to say, I was puzzled myself by the result."

Rivoire also says there is "a little bit of Mourinho" in the club's Portuguese manager Leonardo Jardim (formerly of Sporting Lisbon and Olympiacos) because of his tactical approach.

In contrast, Rivoire believes that Wenger should have left Arsenal when Real Madrid first came calling for his signature.
