Retirement cut-backs hurt Johnny Heitinga's lifestyle

Johnny Heitinga is struggling to cope with the financial aspects of life as a former professional footballer.

The defender, who played in the 2010 World Cup Final, also has spells in England with Everton and Fulham. He retired at the end of last season, after one year in Amsterdam with his first club Ajax.

Along with his wife Charlotte-Sophie, the 33-year-old gave an interview to 1Limburg where they spoke about how their lifestyle has drastically changed since he retired.

"When I played football, more money came in. Our spending was there also. We try to adapt," Heitinga admitted.

Holidays seem to be where Heitinga and his wife have had to adjust most. "Before, we sometimes took a private jet, but we do not. On vacation, we still rent a big house, but you have different categories of 'fancy'.

"We live differently now," Charlotte-Sophie added. "Sometimes that's difficult... It takes getting used to."

If the lack of a private jet was tough enough on the Heitingas, they now have to dress themselves too. They cannot afford a personal stylist any more.

"Previously Danie Bles dressed us. She is a very good stylist, and what it cost, but it was too easy," the now-Ajax coach revealed. "We could not simply go to Paris, Milan or New York to shop" his wife added.

Life must be tough as a Heitinga.
