Report: IFAB to allow five substitutes from next season

It is reported by The Athletic that the International Football Association Board is to allow five substitutes to roll over from this season to next.

The number of replacements allowed in a game was capped at three before the COVID 19 pandemic, and once play resumed, flexibility was provided to extend this to five subs as it was felt that squads needed to get up to speed to protect players on the basis that the fixture list would be heavy and also that there was a limited time to train.

Player welfare concerns may remain going into the 2020-21 season, with the Premier League campaign not set to start until September.

So the IFAB is due to continue with the practice of facilitating extra replacements.

To date, only Liverpool, Manchester United and Brighton have used all five subs in all of their games since the top flight resumed last month.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer emptied his bench with ten minutes to go in the 3-0 win over Sheffield United in June.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has been one of those opposed to five subs next season, feeling that it tips the balance in favour of bigger clubs and stronger squads.

The IFAB consists of one representative from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and four representatives from FIFA.
