That means some excellent knockout round ties await us, including the potential for a showdown between holders USA and hosts France even before the semi-final stage.
England, Germany European champions Netherlands and a clutch of other challengers also pose a threat.

Since the Women's World Cup's inception under FIFA auspices in 1991, the game has grown globally.
That's reflected in the depth of elite teams as well as the changing face of the latter stages in recent tournaments.
All in all, 10 different nations have reached a Women's World Cup semi-final across the seven full editions so far.
