PSG are up against it versus Chelsea, no matter what they tweet

Whoever runs the PSG English Twitter account likes to have a little bit of fun.

However, provocative tweets do have an unfortunate habit of backfiring.

As Paris Saint-Germain led Caen 2-0 in Ligue 1 at the weekend, this emanated from the PSG Twitter account:

It was a harmless little dig at tonight's Champions League opponents Chelsea, who have often been mentioned in the same sentence as "parking the bus".

Unfortunately, two minutes after that tweet was sent out to the world, nine-man PSG (two players had to go off injured after all substitutions were made) conceded a goal. But it didn't stop there. Another goal went in for Caen, leaving the Parisians red-faced as they let a win slip away in what has become a disappointing season for France's wealthiest club.

Manager Laurent Blanc also has injury worries to contend with ahead of tonight's match at the Parc des Princes as Serge Aurier, Lucas Moura and Yohan Cabaye miss out through injury.

Key midfield pair Thiago Motta and Blaise Matuidi were also doubts ahead of the match.

But those worries are not stopping PSG's English language Twitter account from promising to get revenge on Chelsea for last season's 3-3 aggregate defeat in last year's Champions League quarter-finals:

That bravado is a little bit odd considering the problems PSG have had this season. Despite being by far the strongest team in France, they are only third in Ligue 1, two points behind an academy-produced young Lyon team with more than half the season gone.

While they might still go on to win a third league title in a row, problems from the start of the season remain.

French football writer Philippe Auclair, who will be previewing the match on Off The Ball tonight, told us as far back as September that there were issues within the team and major question marks over Blanc's tactical level and squad management.

I looked at the challenge of PSG with Oisin Langan on the Monday Rewind (towards the end)

Our European football reviewer Ben Lyttleton recently told us that there was a split in the dressing room between the French core and the Brazilian and Italian contingent.

This time last month, Auclair updated us on the situation and suggested that there seemed to be a sense of complacency among the players and that Blanc's lack of "real-time game management" made it unlikely that he would still be in charge of PSG next season.

So it's a good thing that he is coming up against an elite tactician like Jose Mourinho, isn't it?

PSG did manage an impressive 3-1 win in last season's first leg. But a club like PSG, who aspire to be among the best in Europe, did conspire to concede two goals and allowed themselves to be eliminated by a Demba Ba goal three minutes from time.

It is hard to believe that a superior game manager like Mourinho would allow a 3-1 advantage to slip, which really places question marks over Blanc and his team.

They will need all their tactical nous to out-wit a strong Chelsea at this stage of the competition, and based on current form they are really up against it.
