Breathing space for Premier League as UEFA delays key meeting

UEFA have announced the postponement of a key meeting which would allow the Premier League some extra breathing space in planning the end of the season.

In a short statement released on its official website, UEFA announced their decision to hold the next meeting of its Executive Committee will now take place on 17 June.

The meeting had been originally scheduled for 27 May.

The UEFA statement explains that the postponement is, "due to the existence of some remaining open points regarding a small number of proposed venues for the rearranged UEFA EURO 2020 next year."

European football's governing body notified leagues at the end of April that they would need to know by May 25th if the competitions will restart and if so, when they plan to do it and which format will they use.

The Executive Committee meeting is also due to confirm the schedule for the remaining Champions League and Europa League matches which the UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin spoke about at the weekend.

Both competitions are at the round-of-16 stage.

"We have an idea but we have to wait for the executive committee of UEFA to confirm the dates. I can say that the European season will be finished, if everything is as it is now, in August," Ceferin told beIN Sports.

"As things look now, I’m sure... that we can finish the European season and this means UEFA competition.

"I think the majority of leagues will finish the season. The ones who will not, it’s their decision.

"But they will still have to play qualifiers if they want to participate in the European UEFA competition."

The Premier League had hoped to resume action by June 12 but there have been a number of stumbling blocks, the most recent of which coming from Steve Bruce at the weekend.

The Newcastle United manager claimed that he would need six weeks to get his players ready for the remaining nine matches of the season.

There was some progress made today though as the English top-flight's clubs voted unanimously to return to training in small groups this week which could see a return to play by June 19.
