Premier League gearing up for early finish says Udinese sporting director

Udinese sporting director Pierpaolo Marino has claimed that the Premier League are ready to bring the current season to a premature end.

Udinese are run by the Pozzo family who also own Premier League strugglers Watford.

Belgium's Pro League bosses have come to a unanimous agreement to end their season - it still has to be voted for at the General Assembly - and Marino claims that the same will happen in England.

"The Belgian Federation has already sanctioned the end of their league, despite the threats of sanctions from UEFA," Marino told Italian sports TV outlet Sportitalia.

"In England, the Premier League is about to release a similar statement, because the situation there is becoming very, very serious.

"I frankly just hope we can enjoy football again after the coronavirus.

"It doesn’t matter how long it takes, we need to get out of this danger zone. I am worried for the next seasons, not the old one."

Last week the Premier League was forced to suspend the season indefinitely but there was also an insistence that the 2019/20 season would play to a finish.

The season will only resume "when it is safe and appropriate to do so", read an official statement.

The statement released by the Pro League bosses in Belgium said that on ending the season early, they would use the current standings as a final classification which would see Club Brugge crowned champions.

All of this would go against the wishes of European football's governing body.

Last week UEFA sent out a letter co-signed by the European Club Association and the European Leagues bodies: "We are confident that football can restart in the months to come — with conditions that will be dictated by public authorities and believe that any decision of abandoning domestic competitions is, at this stage, premature and not justified."
