Pirlo set for Juventus axe, Allegri to return to Turin | Reports

Andrea Pirlo, Juventus manager and club legend, is rumoured to be on his way out the door in Turin after an indifferent first year as head coach, according to The Athletic.

Juventus won the Coppa Italia with a 2-1 win over Atalanta last week. The Italian giants also won the Supercoppa Italiana in January.

Crucially, however, Juventus meekly surrendered their Serie A title, losing out to Antonio Conte's Inter Milan side. Conte has since left Inter following their title win.

Pirlo's men barely made it into the fourth position, securing Champions League football in dramatic fashion with a 4-1 win on the final day of the season against Bologna.

Juventus finished a whopping 13 points behind Inter this season following nine years of ruthless dominance in Serie A.

They also exited the Champions League at the hands of Porto at the Round of 16 stage.

Cristiano Ronaldo was left out of Pirlo's squad against Bologna and it is being reported that he is due to hold fresh talks with the club over his future. If he is to stay on for the final year of his contract, Ronaldo may not have to work with Pirlo next season.

A former manager with a history of success in Turin is set to replace Pirlo it seems.

Allegri to return to Juventus?

Massimiliano Allegri is being lined up as Pirlo's replacement and his return would be welcomed by Juventus supporters.

Allegri won five Scudetti for Juve during a wildly successful spell in charge of the club from 2014 and 2019. He also helped the club lift the Coppa Italia twice and brought Juventus within a whisker of winning their first European Cup since 1996, losing out to Barcelona in 2015 and Real Madrid in 2017.

Allegri's return would be a boost to Juventus after a difficult campaign. It would also bring stability to the club at a difficult moment considering their ongoing difficulties with UEFA over the ill-fated European Super League.

Fabio Paratici, the club's Chief Football Officer left the club on Wednesday afternoon so if Allegri is appointed he will work at the club without one of the figure's who helped orchestrate the success of the last decade.
