PIC: Here's what a Merseyside derby homegrown team would like

As Tottenham prepare to host Arsenal in the latest instalment of the North London derby, one of the key factors cited in their good form this year has been the presence of the crop of players who were self-produced.

Andros Townsend, Ryan Mason and, in particular, the 20 goal Harry Kane have been prominent.

What binds the trio is the fact that they all came through the Spurs academy. 

Arsenal have also built a British core in recent years under Arsene Wenger and two of those are also educated through the system in the shape of Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs.

The Liverpudlian clubs of Liverpool and Everton have also had long histories of key players - often Merseyside-born - ingrained in their spines from Steven Gerrard to ex-Toffees captain Dave Watson, who actually started out in the Reds' reserves.

Since the Premier League began, some of those academy products have been exceptional and are remembered as either club legends or players who went on to have decent careers elsewhere.

Below is an outfield selection of players - not necessarily from the area - but brought through the academy from their teenage years, before appearing during the Premier League era:
