Pat Nevin on Mane red card: "He also was acutely aware where the goalkeeper was"

Pat Nevin joined Joe Molloy and Kevin Kilbane for the Football Show on Monday's Off the Ball to review the weekend's Premier League action.

The fallout from the red card received by Liverpool's Sadio Mane after a challenge on Man City goalkeeper Ederson continues to gather steam.

However, Nevin believes the sending-off was fully warranted, saying: "His feet were too high - it's a free-kick, full stop. If you put your feet up that high and the goalkeeper is not bending down to get that ball - if you put your feet up that high in a challenge...you're not getting away with that.

"Do you know what the muddled thing about it is? I was trying to clarify...one of the things that really needs clarifying is that these things can all fit together: A. Mane didn't got out to hurt the goalkeeper - we know that, we get that, we all accept that.

"He also was acutely aware where the goalkeeper was because you cannot, if you're a player of any ability see that guy running towards you and not put your feet up and not know that he's there.

"Quite simply, if he doesn't think the goalkeeper isn't there - his feet won't come up," he added.

Manchester United's Nani was sent off for a similar incident against Real Madrid in 2013 although he was unsighted when he made contact with his opponent.

"It is so good to remember that Nani one because that's exactly where the mistakes are made. The sending off Nani in that case was a disgrace. His feet were high but he would have absolutely no knowledge (of a player behind him).

"This is not the case with Liverpool. His foot was up. He has peripheral vision and he saw the goalkeeper and he thought 'I'll take the chance and try and nick it by even though I know it's dangerous'".
