Paddy Mulligan: "There seems to be a weakness in the Irish psyche when they get a goal up"

Ireland might have escaped the opening World Cup qualifier in Serbia with a 2-2 draw.

But despite a potentially precious point, the performance threw up plenty of worries.

One was the continued inability to keep hold of the ball and the habit of retreating into our shells when we take the lead as happened in Belgrade.

"The Irish team seem to go 2-1 behind and then they seem to pass the ball. Why didn't you start passing the ball from the very start?" said ex-Ireland and Chelsea full-back Paddy Mulligan on this Tuesday's Rewind podcast episode.

"I don't understand it. Is there a fear factor there that they are afraid they're going to lose the match? Rest assured if you do have that fear factor, you will lose the match because your attitude has changed completely.

"There seems to be a weakness in the Irish psyche when they get a goal up, that they go and lose it within a few minutes. Against the Swedes in the Euros, they got a goal up and then two minutes later, the Swedes could have equalised - and eventually they did."

Paddy also shared his thoughts on Seamus Coleman's issues defensively when positioning himself and also touched on the lack of necessity for a holding midfielder in the way that Glenn Whelan played the role last night.
