Owen Heary named the new Shelbourne manager

Former player Owen Heary has been named as the new manager of First Division strugglers Shelbourne.

Heary was a former league-winning captain with the Drumcondra-based club and replaces former team-mate Kevin Doherty who stepped down last week.

The 39-year-old won four League titles with Shelbourne between 2000 and 2006 as the team led the say for Irish clubs in Europe. He was also part of the team that won the FAI Cup in 2000 as Shelbourne completed the double.

Having already managed Bohemians and Sligo Rovers, Heary returns to League of Ireland management having left the Showgrounds in June 2015.

The deal is initially until the end of the season, with an option to extend it until the end of the 2017 season. Heary's first game in charge will be at home to Cobh Ramblers on Friday evening.
