'It's not an opportunity for us' | Chris Wilder on EFL Cup

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has all but thrown the towel in ahead of the club's next EFL Cup tie.

The newly promoted side have had a good start to their Premier League season with two wins and two draws leaving them in tenth place in the table.

The Blades will be in EFL Cup action tomorrow night as they host League One side Sunderland in third round but Wilder has admitted ahead of the tie that he will not be putting out his best team.

"I think there's certain clubs that are established in the division, that will see this as a genuine opportunity to lift some silverware," said Wilder.

"It's not one for us, it's not a genuine opportunity to win silverware or we would possibly play our full hit and we're not going to, we're going to make changes."

Staying in the most lucrative and elite division in English football will be the priority for the Yorkshire club this season and while they have had a good start, they will be severely tested next Saturday.

European champions and Premier League leaders Liverpool are the guests at Bramall Lane in the lunchtime kick-off.

Sadly, from an Irish perspective, one of United's four international regulars looks set to miss out once again.

Striker David McGoldrick was sidelined with a groin injury ahead of Saturday's win over Everton and Wilder revealed on Tuesday that he remains a doubt for this weekend.

"Yeah, he won't be available [for game against Sunderland]. He'll be touch and go for the weekend," added Wilder. "So, as I talked about after the game on Saturday, it's a disappointing one for David.

"Obviously from his point of view, he'd have loved a goal in the period that he's played but in general his overall play's been outstanding for us. So for him to miss out at the weekend is disappointing for him and me too."
