No positive tests in first round of COVID-19 testing for League of Ireland players

The FAI have confirmed that all the COVID-19 tests taken from players and staff at Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers, Derry City and Dundalk have come back negative.

The Association's Medical Director, Dr Alan Byrne, received the results today of the first batch of tests, which were taken yesterday.

A further round of testing is set to take place for the four clubs next Monday ahead of their planned return to limited training from June the 8th.

Those European qualified teams will also play in a mini-tournament behind closed doors at the Aviva Stadium later this summer as part of the FAI's pilot programme to ensure a safe return for football at all levels in the country.

“This is most welcome news and a very positive step as we work with Government, and their agencies and all stakeholders in the game towards a safer return for all of Irish football,” said FAI Interim Deputy CEO Niall Quinn of the results.

“These negative results are an early boost for everyone in the game but it is only the start. We have to remain vigilant and we again urge all affiliates – clubs, players, supporters and parents – to abide by the Government and HSE guidelines.”
