'Watford should go for Big Sam' | Damien Delaney on Nigel Pearson sacking

Former Republic of Ireland player Damien Delaney says Sam Allardyce is the man to keep Watford’s dreams alive as their new manager, following the sacking of Nigel Pearson.

With only two matches remaining this season, Watford are sitting in 17th position and have sacked Pearson after their defeat to West Ham United on Friday night.

They have two matches remaining, at home to Manchester City and away to Arsenal.

While Delaney believes that Peason may not deserve his dismissal, he can understand why Watford acted.

“One or two things have happened here. He has either gone really heavy on the players after the game on Friday night, or he has gone real heavy on them yesterday after training. Maybe he lost the run of himself and went over the top, considering they are still in with a fighting chance.

“Maybe there was some physical altercation. That’s one possibility.

The other possibility is that the owner has said that he is going to be gone in two games anyway. With the curve that they are on, which is hovering around relegation, they want to give themselves a fighting chance and get a new manager in.”

Delaney believes that his old manager Sam Allardyce as the best man fit to keep Watford in the Premier League.

“I would think of a Sam Allardyce-type character for Watford now. I know you may think I’m crazy, but if you are a business manager or an owner, you want to give yourself a fighting chance.

“Maybe Pearson wasn’t the man when all they needed was a point. Not even a point though, if they lose both of their next two games by at least 1-0, they stay in the Premier League.

“I know people will say that Nigel didn’t deserve that, but I can understand why they did it. Big Sam will walk through that door and everyone will be quite. You would need one result and Sam would lift everyone’s presence.

“If I was in a foxhole right now, the one man I’d want to see is Sam Allardyce.

"He has a presence and everyone would do just what he says. I’m pretty sure with his track record, the club would be a great fit for him.”
