Neymar ordered to pay €6.7m to his former club Barcelona

Neymar is set to pay his former employers Barcelona €6.7 million after losing a Spanish court case over an unpaid loyalty bonus.

The Brazilian moved to PSG for a world-record €222 million in the summer of 2017 and took the Spanish champions to court claiming he and his father were owed over 40 million in loyalty bonuses stemming from a contract extension he signed in October 2016.

Barca had counter-sued for breach of contract, as the attacker had paid his own buyout clause in order to engineer the switch to Paris and today a court has found in favour of the LaLiga leaders.

“FC Barcelona expresses its satisfaction with the verdict announced today by Social Court 15 in Barcelona in relation to the lawsuit involving FC Barcelona and the player Neymar Jr regarding the amount of the signing bonus in the final renewal of the player’s contract," the Spanish champions said in a statement.

“The ruling has fully dismissed the player’s claim for payment of 43.6 million euros, and has accepted a large part of the defence presented by FC Barcelona, as a result of which the player must return €6.7 million to the club.

“Since the player’s representative is entitled to appeal this decision, the club shall continue to fervently defend its legitimate interests.”
