When Lionel Messi revealed his intentions to retire from international football, the world perceived that he said those words on the impulse in light of another disappointment with the national side.
But almost two months have passed and nothing to the contrary has emerged from the Messi camp. Perhaps he's waiting for the next competitive outing before announcing his return but the newly appointed coach Edgardo Bauza, isn't taking any chances.
At his official unveiling yesterday, Bauza spoke of his intentions to usher Messi back into the Argentina fold.
Speaking at a news conference, he said:
"My sole intention is to see if I can talk about football with Messi... and from that chat will come the possibility of him being called up to play Argentina's next games. I want to tell him my idea and for him to tell me how things are with him and then we'll see what comes out of it."
Argentina president Mauricio Macri says he's confident that Lionel Messi will return in time for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
"I think Messi is the greatest player we have ever had and we must show him our appreciation and give him the recognition he deserves in order to feel comfortable."
