"One will be an attacker"| Andy Mitten on Man United's transfer plans

Andy Mitten joined OTB AM on Thursday to discuss the type of players Man United are targeting in the upcoming transfer window.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been doing background checks on players. He wants the right type of personalities to come into Old Trafford,” the United We Stand editor said.

“Players are not going to be signed because they’ve got a big name on the whim of an agent at the last minute.”

It was put to Mitten that this may rule out Jack Grealish, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United.

“I’m not privy to that conversation but looking at it as an outsider, he hasn’t helped himself,” he said.

“When he was seen getting out of his car at whatever time it was in the morning with one flip flop and one slipper on.

“That doesn’t look good, Man United don’t like that type of thing. It’s up to the club to weigh up the player's personality and the past.”

Mitten didn’t put a figure on United’s transfer budget but he said that “they’re in a better position than a lot of rival clubs.”

"The economies of football have definitely changed, it’s clear, there’s no fans allowed into the stadium and every club has taken a hit," he said.

Moving players like Alexis Sanchez, Phil Jones, Jesse Lingard and Marcos Rojo off the wage bill would also help Solskjaer bring players in.

“I think you’re going to see the club sign two or three players and one of them will be an attacker,” Mitten said.

“They would have serious money to go for someone like Jadon Sancho but I don’t think it will be anything like what Borussia Dortmund would be expecting.

"There must be some realism at their end. There’s no Barcelona around to pay €110 million like they did for Ousmane Dembele.

The rise of Mason Greenwood in recent months has made some fans question if they even need to bring in a high-profile attacker.

“Of course it’s encouraging that Mason Greenwood has come into that position but he’s 18 and invariably teen footballers are inconsistent," Mitten said.

“If you look at the great United sides, they’ve always had at least four strikers and a lot of competition for those places.”

Another quality attacker added to the squad to challenge Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood could be just what's needed to lift Manchester United to the next level.
