Pádraig Amond and James Collins included in Mick McCarthy's provisional Ireland squad for Gibraltar and Georgia

Newport County's Pádraig Amond and Luton Town striker James Collins have both been included in Mick McCarthy's provisional Ireland squad ahead of the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign openers later this month.

Ireland go to Gibraltar on 23 March before welcoming Georgia to the Aviva Stadium three days later.

McCarthy has included in-form striker Amond, whose performances for the Welsh side in this year's FA Cup helped knock out Leicester City, Middlesbrough and score against Manchester City.

Both he and Collins have been included in the senior international set-up for the first time.

Keiren Westwood, Stephen Ward, Aiden McGeady, James McCarthy and David McGoldrick all earn call-ups after time away from the senior fold.

Perhaps most notably from those returning players is the inclusion of Glenn Whelan who appeared to have made his last appearance in an Ireland jersey last November.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and Sunderland defender Jimmy Dunne are also included.

Southampton's teenage striker Michael Obafemi misses out through injury, as does Callum O'Dowda, Ciaran Clark and Jon Walters.

Glenn Whelan makes a surprise return to the Ireland team.
