Mexico scored a 2-1 victory over the United States last night with a dramatic 89th minute header from their captain Rafa Marquez.
Given his statements about the election of Donald Trump after the game, it was fitting that Marquez had the honour of scoring the decisive goal.
Throughout his presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly disrespected Mexicans, particularly immigrants who have relocated to American soil.
Among the many controversial statements he made about Mexico, he accused the country of 'ripping off the US more than almost any other nation.' He also famously threatened to 'build a wall' that would prevent Mexicans from entering the United States and promised that Mexico would 'pay for that wall.'
At the game last night, Mexican fans were reportedly wearing costumes mocking Trump while others were heard to be chanting that Trump 'nukes Mexico.'

Prior to their 2-1 victory over America last night, Mexico had suffered four successive World Cup qualifier defeats to America in Columbus, Ohio. Speaking after the win, Marquez said:
"Maybe now they have a bad time, a time of intolerance and with this win maybe they can forget now a little bit what happened here in the US."
"It was a long time that we haven't had a good game (here). We are very happy and this is very important for us. It was the best opportunity to change the story here and tonight was what we had hoped for in the last couple of day.
