Manchester United's Mason Greenwood has been released on bail, pending further investigations.
The forward was initially arrested on Sunday on suspicion of rape and physical assault of a woman.
On Tuesday, he was further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.
Greater Manchester Police say magistrates had granted a second extension to keep him in custody until today (Wednesday).
Greenwood has now been released on bail as investigations continue.
Greater Manchester Police said: "A 20-year-old man arrested on Sunday January 30 2022 on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation."
Manchester United have said that he won't return to training or matches until further notice.
The club says it "did not condone violence of any kind" in a statement.
Greenwood has been removed from FIFA products by video game developer EA Sports, while he has also had his deal with sportswear company Nike suspended.
Greater Manchester Police have reminded the public to refrain from comment on the case.
