Martina Cox has described her husband Sean's return to Anfield for the first time since suffering life-changing injuries after being attacked outside the stadium as "bitter sweet".
The 54-year-old Liverpool fan suffered severe brain injuries in April 2018 when he was the target of an unprovoked attacked before the club's Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma.
Speaking to Off The Ball's Nathan Murphy about her husband's return to Anfield to watch Liverpool v Manchester City, Martina said that while it was difficult it was a good day in Sean's recovery.
"It's great to have him back but at the same time it's bitter sweet," she explained.
"Sean is coming back in a different capacity, he's in a wheelchair. He's got life long injuries. But look, it's a good day and we are really going to enjoy it and I think it will be a great boost for Sean."
Asked about Sean's recovery, Martina said that her husband has been doing particularly well since moving to, and beginning treatment, in Sheffield.
"He's in a rehab facility in Sheffield. He has been there since September. He's starting to make progress and they are happy with him.
"There are a lot of different therapies there which he didn't necessarily get at home, which is really good. He's making progress, he's in the hydro pool and, with the help of two therapy assistants, he's walking."
"He does need a lot of assistance to walk but I think with time and a lot more intensive rehab he will improve and that's a good thing.
"It's been tough for the family. I have been here with Sean and the children are at home and they are commuting back and forth.
"We are just doing it for Sean it's all about Sean's recovery. He needs that, you know."
After a match in aid of Sean's recovery in the Aviva Stadium last year and a number of other fundraising initiatives, Martina emphasised the appreciation of the family for all the support shown.
"It means a lot and it means an awful lot to the family. Without the support and all the fundraising, what LFC have done we wouldn't be in Sheffield with Sean and he wouldn't be getting that care so it means everything to us."
