Martial ruled out of United's first leg Europa League tie against LASK

Anthony Martial will miss the first leg of Manchester United's Europa League Last-16 tie against Austrian side LASK on Thursday night.

The Frenchman is also a doubt for United's Premier League trip to Tottenham at the weekend as they continue their push for Champions League qualification.

Martial injured himself during their 2-0 win over Manchester City last weekend where the 24-year-old scored the host's opening goal.

That took him to 16 so far this season, one less than his career-best of 17 for United which he registered in 2015-16.

His absence leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjær with Odion Ighalo and Mason Greenwood as his only two fit strikers.

Solskjær gave an update today on the Frenchman's fitness.

“Anthony hurt himself when slid into a post so he’s not ready, hopefully he’s ready for Sunday so but I’m not sure – he’s struggling a little bit."

He also provided an update on midfielder Paul Pogba, who has not played for the club since 26th December as he recovers from an ankle injury.

"Paul is getting closer – he’s not trained with the team yet or fully with the team but by next week he will be ready.”

"We’ve got now 24, 25 players training, competing every day and they all know it’s the business end of the season, we’re not giving out game-time now for the sake of game-time, you need to perform to be in and around the first team and even on the bench.”

The game is set to be played behind closed doors at the Linzer Stadion as the Coronavirus crisis continues across Europe.
