Manchester United win the 2017 Europa League

Manchester United are 2016-17 UEFA Europa League champions after a 2-0 win over Ajax at the Friends Arena in Sweden.

Goals from Paul Pogba and Henrik Mkhitaryan made the difference as Jose Mourinho's side also secured qualification into next season's Champions League by winning the final, having missed out on qualification via the Premier League Top Four.

United made the better start in the final, immediately putting Ajax under pressure in the early stages.

And they took the lead on 18 minutes through Paul Pogba's whose shot from range took a deflection and looped over Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana on its way into the net.

United were well structured defensively throughout and kept a young Ajax side at bay.

They doubled their lead three minute after half time when Chris Smalling's knock down was acrobatically flicked in by Henrik Mkhitaryan from close range.

With the clock ticking down, Mourinho was able to introduce Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney, in what could potentially be the club captain's final appearance for the club, on for the final period before the full time whistle.

United now enter next season's Champions League group stages and also become the first Premier League side to win the Europa League since Chelsea in 2013.

And in terms of European trophies, United will add that Europa League trophy to three European Cup/Champions Leagues and the 1991 European Cup Winners Cup which means they have now completed the full set of major continental trophies.
