Manchester United trounce Feyenoord to vault into Europa League knockout round reckoning

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring at Old Trafford as Manchester United beat Feyenoord 4-0 in their Europa League group stage clash.

Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard added two of the other goals, while Brad Jones' own goal contributed to the comfortable scoreline.

The result sees United leapfrog their Dutch opponents in Group A and puts them second behind Fenerbahce, who beat United's sixth matchday opponents Zorya Luhansk of Ukraine 2-0.

An away draw against Zorya on December 8th will be enough to progress out of the group.

Manager Jose Mourinho made a few significant decisions before the game by including summer signing Henrik Mkhitaryan in midfield as well as Sergio Romeo in goal, as David De Gea was rested.

Mkhitaryan has barely featured in the first-team this season, but impressed against Feyenoord.

Rooney gave United the lead on 35 minutes, lifting his close range finish above goalkeeper Brad Jones to net his record 39th European goal for the club, although the Dutch side did appeal for offside.

Mata then added a second with 21 minutes to go, before Jones' own goal and Lingard's late finish sealed victory by a four-goal margin.

Earlier, Southampton lost 1-0 at Group K leaders Sparta Prague in their group encounter.

But a goalless draw or a win in their final group game against Hapoel Be'er Sheva will put the Saints through to the knockout stage.
