Manchester City's spending, and where the money comes from, makes them a 'harder club to love' according to Associate Editor of The Currency Dion Fanning.
Pep Guardiola's Manchester City side are sitting atop the Premier League table, and are looking likely to win the league this season.
However, with Liverpool in line to win a potential quadruple, Jurgen Klopp's supporters are more vocal than those supporting City.
The increasingly vocal support for the Merseyside club has annoyed Guardiola, as he feels that City have not been supported as much as Liverpool.
Guardiola was speaking to the media during the week, where he vented his frustrations that 'everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone'.
Speaking on The Football Show on Wednesday, Fanning questioned what has made Guardiola so unhappy about the situation.
"What is making Pep so unhappy?" Fanning said. "I would start wondering what is it about Manchester City that people just can't love?
"I don't know. What is it about this exceptional team? Maybe they do love it, maybe we are blind to it. I think they are very easy to admire, but why don't they capture the imagination?
"What is it about the entire project that makes people feel maybe it is all just a little it too easy?"
Manchester City have just announced that striker Erling Haaland will be joined the club from next season. This signing is one of the examples as to why Fanning believes that City are difficult to love, as there seems to be an inevitability of them signing whoever they want.
"To me, it didn't feel like it was thrilling," Fanning said. "It is fascinating, it is interesting to see what he is going to do there, but it seem inevitable.
"Pep, the manager who kind of believes in a team almost without strikers is now saying, 'give me a striker just in case, I'll just have that too, because I can'.
"So, when you spend all that money, don't start complaining that people don't give you credit because of all the money you spend!"
Guardiola made the point during the week that all of the successful Premier League clubs in the past have spent a lot.
However, Fanning feels that the money itself is only half of the problem that fans have in supporting City.
"Of course, the money in Manchester City is, without a doubt, the most important factor in their success," Fanning said. "It is the most important factor in many clubs success.
"They have used it very smartly, but it is the most important factor. Unfortunately, the other factors that are present and where the money is coming from, means that people find it a harder club to love. Maybe I am wrong."
