It's a weird time to be a York City fan.
Last week, manager Jackie McNamara vowed to step down if his team failed to get a "positive result" in their game against Braintree Town. The team drew 1-1, and McNamara has stepped down.
In an unusual event, McNamara is to leave the job, but not before a new manager is appointed. The former Celtic defender will remain in a caretaker capacity with the club until his replacement is found.
The Conference strugglers released a statement on Monday morning, confirming McNamara's impending departure.
"Further to the statement last week regarding the future of York City Manager, Jackie McNamara and following the game on Saturday, it has been decided, in the best interest of York City Football Club, that Jackie McNamara step down as First Team Manager.
After purposeful discussions it was agreed that results and performances, in the main, have not been acceptable nor have they achieved the high standards expected.
In order to assist the managerial transition period and to accommodate a thorough identification, interview and appointment process, the Chairman has asked Jackie McNamara to train and prepare the team until a suitable candidate has been determined.
This process should be completed within two weeks."
From vowing to resign, to then resigning, but remaining as manager is certainly an unusual way to conduct business at a club. McNamara will be in the dugout for the team's next game, at home to Curzon Ashton in the FA Cup on Saturday.
