Brian Kerr has told Off The Ball that he has been left saddened by the expense of the departure of John Delaney from the FAI, saying that money could have been reinvested into the Irish game.
The former Republic of Ireland manager was left disappointed that payments that Delaney was due under the terms of his contract could otherwise have gone into strengthening football at home – particularly in the League of Ireland.
“My personal opinion is that it is a shame that they had to keep paying him over the last few months,” said Kerr.
“That is roughly €175,000 while he was still on some sort of gardening leave, when the game is struggling out for money.
“I saw a piece with the Sligo Rovers chairman yesterday, in relation to them getting to the [FAI] Cup final - and the bonus that is - but that the FAI will take a large sum from the gate receipts with Dundalk today.
“That has been in the rules for a long time.
Instead of the FAI giving Sligo money for getting to the cup semi-final, they are giving the FAI money. Meanwhile, the ex-CEO – on gardening leave – was receiving substantial amounts of money.”
Kerr reiterated that he was particularly disappointed that Delaney will reportedly receive a settlement for leaving the role at the FAI.
“It seems that he is going to get even more money now to leave the place. Having, it appears, left the place in disarray, with debts all over the place.
“It’s just a mad world.”
