RUGBY

The Ireland squad have been training at Carton House this morning, ahead of Saturday's Six Nations visit of France.

An update on the fitness of Sean O'Brien is due later.

Wales have escaped punishment from rugby union's international governing body over a head injury suffered by George North.

A second blow to the head in Friday's Six Nations defeat to England was missed by medics - a point noted by World Rugby, who said he shouldn't have remained on the field.

North has not suffered any symptoms of concussion since the incident.

World Rugby is to look at making video replays available to medical staff to assess head injuries as they happen on the field.

Ulster have announced that Willie Faloon will return to the province next season.

The openside flanker will rejoin from Connacht, having swapped Kingspan Stadium for the Sportsgrounds in 2012.

The 28-year old has signed a one-year contract with Ulster.

SOCCER

There are four games in the Premier League tonight.

Raheem Sterling is reportedly out of Liverpool's meeting with Tottenham, after suffering a knock to the foot during Saturday's Merseyside derby.

Chris Ramsey remains in temporary charge of QPR for their trip to Sunderland.

A win for Hull at home to Aston Villa will see them climb out of the dropzone.

David Meyler scored for the Tigers in their draw with Manchester City and says his fellow midfielders need to chip in with more goals.

The Corkman is looking forward to testing himself against Paul Lambert's men.

The future of Leicester manager Nigel Pearson remains in the balance, with the bottom side travelling to Arsenal.

The FA have written to Pearson to remind him of his responsibilities, but will not face punishment for his bizarre touchline scuffle with Crystal Palace midfielder, James McArthur.

During Saturday's defeat at the King Power, Pearson appeared to pin the Scot with a choking action.

Paddy McNair has signed a new contract at Manchester United, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2017 with the option of further year.

This season has been a breakthrough year for the 19-year old, establishing himself as a constant in Louis Van Gaal's squad.

Former Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra is training with West Ham with a view to signing a short-term deal with the club.

The French international has been without a side since leaving Lokomotiv Moscow last August.

Marco Reus has signed a new contract with Borussia Dortmund, keeping him with the Bundesliga club until 2019.

The Germany forward's previous deal was due to expire in 2017, and he had attracted the interest of Real Madrid and a host of Premier League sides.

German magazine Kicker report there is no release clause in Reus's new contract.

GAELIC GAMES

Laois midfielder Kevin Meaney has stepped away from the county's senior football panel.

Meaney was expected to replace the suspended Brendan Quigley for Sunday's defeat by Cavan, but he was notable for his absence.

It's a further blow to manager Tomás Ó Flatharta, with Conor Meredith, Craig Rogers and M-J Tierney all unavailable.

The O'Moore men sit bottom of Division 2 in the Allianz National Football League after two straight defeats.

There are seven games in the third round of the Fitzgibbon Cup today.

UUJ host DITGMIT take-on local rivals NUIG and UCC face UL at the Mardyke (all at 2pm).

DCU and St Pats-Mater Dei clash at the DCU Sportsgrounds (6.30pm).

And there's three games underway at 7pm - Cork IT host UCDWIT play Maynooth University and IT Carlow have home advantage against Mary I.

CRICKET

Ireland have received a big wake-up call, with the start of the World Cup less than a week away suffering a 179-run defeat to Scotland in Sydney.

Phil Simmons' side were bowled out for just 117 as they chased a target of 297.

Ireland made 57 before the loss of their first wicket, and collapsed there-after.

Captain William Porterfield says it was down to poor concentration levels.

Ireland have one more warm-up game, against Bangladesh on Thursday, before they open their World Cup Pool B campaign against the West Indies in Nelson on Monday.

Meanwhile, Ireland's most capped player has announced his international retirement.

Andrew White bows out with 231 appearances to his name, after a serious finger injury prevented the 34-year old from appearing at the World Cup.

RACING

The Grade 3, Surehaul Mercedes-Benz Novice Hurdle the highlight of a seven-race card at Clonmel this afternoon.

The first race there goes to post at 1.35pm.
