Liverpool hit by Alisson Becker injury blow - Klopp confirms

Liverpool have been dealt a massive blow with the news that Alisson Becker will be sidelined for 'the next few weeks'.

The Reds goalkeeper was forced off with a calf injury sustained in the Premier League season-opening win against Norwich City last Friday.

Jürgen Klopp revealed the news on the official club website on Monday evening.

The Merseysiders' 4-1 victory against the Canaries at Anfield was overshadowed by the Brazil international's premature departure which saw him replaced by new signing Adrian in the late stages of the first half.

Klopp confirmed that he will be without Alisson for the UEFA Super Cup clash with Chelsea this week and that he could be without the netminder for a period of weeks.

"[It’s] Not too cool. It’s a calf injury which takes him obviously out for a while," said Klopp.

"I don’t want to make now [an] exact prognosis on when he will be back but it will not be Wednesday for sure, so now then we have to see. It takes a while, it takes a couple of weeks for sure, and we have to see.

"I saw already like ‘six weeks’ and stuff like this, but Ali was not a lot injured in his career so I would like to wait a little bit to see how he develops in that process now, but he is not in for the next few weeks."

Virgil van Dijk backs Alisson Becker replacement

32-year-old Adrian was a free agent following his departure from West Ham United where he spent six years after signing from La Liga club Real Betis.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk believes that the Spaniard's experience will be vital in Alisson's absence.

"Alisson is very important for us but whatever the outcome [of the injury] we have to deal with it and we are going to deal with it," said Van Dijk.

"Adrian is at that age, that stage of his life and career, that he can come in and slot into the team pretty easy. He has been through so many things in the Premier League.

"When he came on, I just wished him luck and to do his normal things. It is unlucky that we conceded but that's part of football sometimes."
