Liverpool win to maintain Everton's Anfield hoodoo

Liverpool have climbed up to third in the Premier League as they claimed the bragging rights in the Merseyside derby.

Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi scored in the 3-1 win over Everton which secured a derby double for the season.

The result also severely dents Everton's outside chance of finishing in the Top 4, with Ronald Koeman's side remaining seventh, seven points behind fourth place Manchester City who have two games in hand.

And the Toffees' long wait for a win at Anfield now stretches to 18 years.

Liverpool hit the front after just eight minutes as Sadio Mane made an angled run at the Everton defence before applying a precise left footed finish past goalkeeper Joel Robles, who would have a day to forget.

But it was Everton who leveled from a corner as the ball fell for Matthew Pennington to convert from close range 20 minutes later.

However, before Everton could sit on that equaliser, Liverpool had retaken the lead. An excellent run from Philippe Coutinho with the ball at his feet saw the Brazilian make into the box and curl a brilliant right footed finish into the far corner.

And just before the hour mark, Divock Origi who replaced the injured Mane was found in space by Coutinho and he drove in a finish from the edge of the box past a Robles rooted to his spot to make it 3-1 and effectively end the game as a contest.
