Liverpool and Manchester United warn fans against "offensive or discriminatory behaviour" ahead of Monday night's clash

Fans have been urged to "respect the great rivalry" between Manchester United and Liverpool this Monday night as the sides meet for the first time in the Premier League.

A joint statement club issued by both Premier League sides have asked fans to refrain from "offensive or discriminatory" behavior, which has marred recent meetings between the sides.

Manchester United fans were widely condemned in March for their part in singing about the Hillsborough tragedy during their 2-0 loss to Liverpool in the Europa League.

Liverpool fans, meanwhile, were also warned about their behaviour as they appeared to chant about the Munich air disaster in April of this year.

In a joint statement the clubs said: "Both clubs, their supporters and football fans around the world are looking forward to this historic and passionate match between two of the sport’s biggest and oldest rivals.

"There is great rivalry between our fans and we ask all supporters to be respectful and help eradicate all forms of offensive and discriminatory behaviour from the game.

"If any supporters are found to be engaged in any form of offensive or discriminatory behaviour by stewards or via CCTV then they will be immediately removed from the stadium, risk arrest, prosecution and be reported in accordance with the club’s ground regulations."

They added: "This is an unrivalled fixture in the Premier League calendar and we thank all fans for their continued support in this important area of the game."

A spokesperson from Kick it Out, said: "Both Liverpool and Manchester United should be commended for this proactive approach ahead of this important fixture.

"We always encourage supporters to report any form of discrimination they may see or hear. Our reporting app, which is available to download from the App Store and Google Play, allows users the option to attach photos and videos."

Meanwhile, Liverpool will feature a special sponsor on their jersey for the game on Monday night (KO 8pm at Anfield).

The Reds will be wearing the 'Seeing is Believing' logo on their shirts to promote a flagship community programme which works to tackle avoidable blindness.
