Derry City legend Liam Coyle is delighted with a sweet season for the Candystripes

Derry City legend Liam Coyle is enthused by Kenny Shiels' leadership as the club sit in a high-flying position of second in the League of Ireland Premier Division.

The Derry-born former forward, who won two League of Ireland titles and three FAI Cups with the Candystripes, during four spells spreading from 1986 to 2003, is enjoying what he is seeing.

"For Derry fans, after what they've had to watch over the last couple of years, it's just great for them to see," he told Oisin Langan and Daniel Kelly on Newstalk's Airtricity League Podcast.

Coyle is also pleased to see manager Shiels operating with a core of locally-produced young talent.

"He's always had a reputation anywhere he's managed where he does like young players because he knows he can mould them into the way he plays. The young players he's brought in have bought into what he's doing and he wants to be fit, disciplined and working hard. They're the three main things he's looking for in his team and the young players have really bought into the way he's playing, so you can't knock him for not bringing Paddy McCourt. For me, personally I would have brought Paddy in a heartbeat but he's the manager and later on down the line, it mightn't have worked."
