League of Ireland season may run past its scheduled conclusion

The League of Ireland Premier Division is scheduled to finish on October 28th, but the FAI have admitted the season may run over.

Dundalk's run to the group stages of the Europa League, along with Cork City's lengthy run means that there is a fixture backlog in the league. Dundalk and Cork City have play two and three games less respectively than third-placed Derry City.

Speaking to the Irish Times, FAI Competitions Director Fran Gavin revealed that finishing the league later than planned is certainly an option.

“Dundalk in Europe is bringing up challenges for everybody and it’s a great position to be in”, Gavin admitted, while adding that the season may begin earlier next year.

“Over the next few weeks we’ll make some announcements around that, particularly around starting the league a little bit earlier. That’s a possibility from next year. This year with the Euros, we had a longer break, but that will be shorter. I think there’s a recognition that that needs to happen."

With no Europa League games this week, there is a full round of fixtures this weekend Derry's trip to Dundalk on Friday, followed by Cork's journey north to Sligo on Saturday.
