La Liga could resume "soon" - Spanish Prime Minister

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says he expects La Liga to resume "soon" after clubs were given permission to resume training from next week.

The individual sessions will take place with strict social distancing guidelines in place with group training set to permitted later this month.

"We hope that leagues and federations will come to a decision soon," Sanchez when asked about a potential return of games behind closed doors.

"We already started to allow individual training sessions for team sports, we hope a return will come sooner rather than later but we'll see it first on television rather than in the stadiums, I'm afraid.

"It will be possible to carry out individual training of players and the basic training of professional leagues from May the 4th.

That will be the date when the athletes can start again, in compliance with the protocols and instructions of La Liga."

Players from the top two flights in Spain have been undergoing tests for COVID-19 and La Liga's organisers are hoping to get games back underway in empty stadiums in mid-June.

"We have time, there’s no need to rush. But our plan is to restart the competition in June. We have time until June 28th, we were keen to start training," league president Javier Tebas said of their plans this week.
