Manchester United’s continued slumber in the post-Ferguson era may inhibit their ability to sign the very best in world football but their current transfer policy under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a step in the right direction, according to Kevin Kilbane.
Kilbane was on Friday’s OTB AM and said that the current policy of signing young British players from lower-level teams, while out of tune with United’s recent transfer history, will make the side better.
“I don’t think Man United need to be going out and saying, as they were two or three years ago, saying we need to go out and sign Paul Pogba. Because it has gone wrong for United.”
“I think they are doing it right they need to go down the next tier and bring in players who are going to make the team better. Because United haven’t been a team and they are not a team. The way I’ve seen it over the last few seasons it hasn't been right.
“So maybe it's not necessarily going out and signing a huge name if they are competing they will be able to compete cause Man United can pay more money than Man City and Liverpool.”
Kilbane highlighted his belief that United need to sign several experienced players that can take control of the dressing room and eradicate the more negative elements that have reportedly been a feature at the club over the past two years.
“United, they are not a particularly attractive option for the big names around. I have heard Rakitic mentioned. Would you go out and get him? He is 30 odd but he is an experienced player who has done it.
"United probably need a couple of experienced lads who are good pros and will get hold of that dressing room. And they need an element of youth around that too.”
While Kilbane says United are not a “particularly attractive option” and that they will struggle to attract the best players, one player that would be a great move for the club is Gareth Bale.
Further, Kilbane said that like Pogba, Lukaku was “another signing that had not worked” and that the club should let both players leave. Instead United should build the attacking outlet of the team around Marcus Rashford. However, Kilbane warned that United need to improve their style to get the best out of the 21-year-old striker.
“Rashford potentially could be one of the very best but he is playing in a side at the moment that doesn't play the style of football that would suit him. I think the way José Mourinho and United have played has stunted his progression.”
